During the early 1800s, Spanish missionaries traveled from San Juan Bautista to visit the Yokut Indians in this area. Padre Felipe Arroyo de la Cuesta discovered warm pools of water in the rocks of the summit of the mountains in a little creek bed that flowed down into the San Joaquin Valley on one of those visits. He named the area "los banos”, which meant “The Baths”. Reports of these baths led to the local ranchers naming the creek “El Arroyo de Los Banos del Padre Arroyo”. In time that was shortened to“Los Banos Crick”, which became Los Banos when a post office was established.
Los Banos is fast-growing, and the second-largest city (approximately 48,000) in Merced County, situated on the west side of the magnificent San Joaquin Valley, near the junction of California Highway 152 and Interstate 5. Los Banos boasts affordable housing and commercial real estate values compared to those in the Central Coast, South Bay, and San Francisco Bay areas. It's referred to as "The Crossroads", it's the major corridor for commuter, recreational, and commercial traffic from the Central Valley to the Central Coast and the South Bay.
According to Mexican land grants the area was first settled in 1840. The most prosperous of all Los Banos residents was Henry Miller, partner of Miller and Lux Corporation, which was headquartered at what's now Espana's. Before his death, Miller was the largest landowner in the United States.
SR 152 is a major international highway trade corridor linking the north-south trade corridor backbones of US 101, I-5, and SR 99. Along with the I-80 and I-580(I-205)/I-238/I-880 corridors, SR 152 provides a critical east-west connection between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Valley. SR 152 is also a vital link for Monterey Peninsula traffic. SR 152 is the only major east-west route between I-580 to the north and SR 46 to the south, a distance of 180 miles. SR 152 is the only continuous east-west route connecting SR 99 and US 101, and also provides a viable alternative to the heavily congested I-580 (I-205)/I238/I-880 east-west corridor.
In 2008, the value of agricultural production generated from counties along or adjacent to the SR 152 corridor was almost half of the total agricultural production for the entire State.
